How to determine your skin type dry / oily / combination skin

Most of us buy skincare products as recommended by our friends, thinking that it’ll do the same wonders as it did to our friends. BUT, then it doesn’t work the same way. WHY?

Because there is a difference in skin type. The type of the skin is the first and most important thing to know before buying the product and expecting the result from them.

Obviously, visiting the skin expert or doctor for this favour is the best way, but if you can’t take out this much time, here I tell you the easiest way of categorizing the skin at home.

1. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser to remove all dirt, oil and makeup.

2. Pat your face dry and leave your skin absolutely bare for about an hour.

3. Do not apply any moisturiser, toner or hydrating cream. Resist even to touch your face and then closely observe the natural reaction of your skin.

If your skin feels itchy, tight and has flakey patches, then it is a DRY skin.

If it feels greasy, especially in the T-zone ( forehead, nose, around the nose and chin), then it is an OILY skin.

If there is oil in the T-zone but dryness at C-zone (cheeks and jawline), then it is a COMBINATION.

If you have a good feel, not too oily, not too dry, then it is a NORMAL skin

If you feel inflammation and redness on the face, then it is a SENSITIVE skin.

Once you figure this out, it is also essential to know that our skin type keeps changing as per our age, health, season and many other factors. Using the products which are not as per our skin type can lead to more problems, aggregate the existing skin issues and doesn’t take the skin to a better place. So, don’t lock yourself in one type frame, evaluate when and how your skin is changing and how you need to change the skin care products and regime along with it.

Remember skin is the largest organ of our body and it’s the one that comes in direct contact with the environment and is our first line of defense. Every skin type needs special care.

If you have dry skin then limit the use of soap and over washing and try to use thick cream. It will help to minimize the moisture loss from skin and maintain its hydration. Also, occasional exfoliation helps remove the dead skin cells and allows proper absorption of moisturizers.

For people with oily skin, light moisturizer is a must. Try to avoid much humectants such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid or sodium lactate in lotions, especially in summers. This will make you look greasier instead.

People with normal skin are really blessed ones. They can mostly use any product they want. However, it might be a good idea to use different products as per weather.

Sensitive skin people need a little bit extra care. This is what I have so I can write for hours about it. This is where minimalist approach is best. Try to use products that use minimum ingredients and no artificial fragrance. Weekly exfoliation is a good idea but keep it really light.

This was a brief about various skin types and how to take basic care of ourselves according to skin types. But above all that, there is one thing that we should always remember.

Beauty is not skin deep. We are all beautiful by our actions. So lets cherish what we are and enjoy being beautiful already !!
